design ethnography

Underpinning and linking all my empirical research is a set of methodologies that is ethnographic in approach and strongly oriented towards making and working with visual material. This includes design ethnography, an approach I have used and refined in close collaboration with colleagues at RMIT. Recent publications reflect this approach: Uncertainty and Possibility: New Approaches to Future Making in Design Anthropology (2018), with Yoko Akama and Sarah Pink and Atmospheres and the Experiential World: Theory and Methods (2019) with Sarah Pink.

Projects employing new visual techniques is also reflected in the 2017 book I co-edited with Edgar Gómez-Cruz (UNSW) and Sarah Pink, Refiguring Techniques in Digital Visual Research (Palgrave Pivot). This was based on the 'Refiguring Techniques in Digital-Visual Research' international and interdisciplinary symposium in Melbourne in late 2016.

Since 2018, with colleagues from RMIT's School of Design, I have been collaborating to develop a sensory trolley for use by Psychiatric Services at Bendigo Hospital. The trolley will help clinical staff to conduct mobile multi-sensory experiences to improve the wellbeing of staff and patients within the hospital, and help build skills in patients in their lives outside the hospital setting. This project builds on my previous involvement with the 'Design for Wellbeing' project at Bendigo Hospital, led by Sarah Pink and Laurene Vaughan, and uses practice-based and design ethnographic research methodologies.
